How to Choose a Water Purification System for Your Home: Tips from ClimaEco
In Alicante, Benidorm, and Gandía, the problem of hard water is particularly acute. Limescale deposits ruin water heaters, washing machines, and kettles. A properly selected purification system will extend the life of your appliances and protect your health.
First and foremost rule: Before buying a filter, get your tap water tested. Only a laboratory analysis will show exactly which impurities need to be removed from your water.
1. What Impurities Are Found in Water
- Mechanical: sand, silt, clay, rust — visible to the eye, damage appliances.
- Chemical: hardness salts (calcium, magnesium), iron, manganese, chlorides, nitrates.
- Biological: bacteria, viruses, algae.
2. Types of Purification Systems
Mechanical filters — trap large particles (sand, rust). Installed first in the system.
Water softeners (ion exchange) — remove hardness salts (calcium and magnesium). The most important stage for our region.
Iron removal systems — remove iron and manganese if the analysis shows excess levels.
Carbon filters — remove chlorine, unpleasant odors, improve water taste.
Reverse osmosis systems — remove almost all impurities (up to 99%), including heavy metals and bacteria. The output is perfectly pure water, but a mineralizer may be needed for taste.
Ultraviolet lamps — destroy bacteria and viruses without chemicals.
3. How to Choose the Right System
- For an apartment, a compact under-sink system (reverse osmosis or flow filter) is sufficient.
- For a private house, you need a full-scale station with a mechanical filter, softener, and possibly an iron remover.
- If the water is very hard (as in Alicante) — a softener is essential.
- If there are concerns about bacteriological safety — install a UV lamp.
4. What to Look for When Buying
- Capacity: how many liters per hour the system can purify. For a family of 3-4 people, you need at least 150-200 L/day.
- Cartridge life: how often they need replacement and how much they cost.
- Ease of maintenance: whether you can change cartridges yourself.
- Certifications: the system should have documents confirming its purification efficiency.
