How to Choose an Air Conditioner for Home and Apartment: Tips from ClimaEco

Choosing an air conditioner is not just about deciding to "buy a split system." The modern market offers dozens of types, hundreds of models, and many features. To avoid confusion and choose equipment that truly suits your home in Alicante, Benidorm, or Gandía, follow our recommendations.

Main rule: Don't buy an air conditioner "for growth." A model that's too powerful will turn on and off frequently, not dehumidify the air properly, and consume excess energy. One that's too weak won't handle the heat.

1. Determine the Type of Air Conditioner

Wall-mounted split system — the most popular and balanced option. Indoor unit in the room, outdoor unit on the facade. Quiet, efficient, wide range of models. Suitable for most apartments and houses.

Multi-split system (3x1, 4x1, 5x1) — one outdoor unit works with 2-5 indoor units. Ideal for apartments where you can't install many units on the facade, or for houses with multiple rooms.

Portable air conditioner — stands on the floor, a hose goes out the window. Pros: movable, no installation required. Cons: noisy, less power. Suitable for rental housing or a summer cottage.

Ducted air conditioner — hidden behind a suspended ceiling and cools several rooms at once. Requires complex design. For large cottages and villas.

2. Calculate the Power

Basic formula: for every 10 m² of area, about 1 kW of power is needed. Add 0.2-0.3 kW for each person and another 0.3-0.5 kW if the room is on the sunny side.

Example: an 18 m² bedroom with two people and south-facing windows = 1.8 + 0.4 + 0.4 = 2.6 kW.

  • Heating mode: works down to -5°C. Not suitable for winter, but good for the off-season.
  • Wi-Fi control: convenient to turn on the air conditioner in advance when returning home.
  • Fine filters: relevant for allergy sufferers and dusty areas.

5. What NOT to Do

  • Don't buy cheap noname brands — quality and service are unpredictable.
  • Don't skimp on installation — unprofessional installation ruins any air conditioner.
